IN Style – IN Design: Interior Lighting Outdoors?
by Lauren Ballas – LEED AP
Can it be so…YES! A new trend brings us more options for outdoor lighting for those of us who want to extend our time outside. Which is perfect for those of us living in Houston! There are options that are unique, simple and look much like the fixtures in your dining room or kitchen. Some of your options are chandeliers, pendants and table lamps. Consider placement of the fixtures, if they are weather durable and how much light is necessary for the space.
With this space being completely exposed to the outdoors you might want to think about a chandelier with candles. It has the same look as the chandelier in your dining room and gives off a nice warm glow. Maybe hang two chandeliers instead of one for more light coverage.
For any decks, patios or verandas…you can go with fixtures that are just like the ones on the interior of your home and are weather proof. You may want to talk to your designer about an electrical plan to make sure you are planning your outdoor entertaining space to the max.
A more romantic approach is taking a ton of little single candles and hanging them from the terrace in a random pattern. Hang them at different lengths to create layer and texture to the space above the dinner table. You will never want to go inside after that!
Something a little more fun are these illuminated cordless furniture pieces. Place them in the sand, on your deck or in your modern living room. No one will believe you that it is a seat!
It’s almost summer…are you going to throw a pool party? Make sure you invite some cordless floating globes. They have a remote control that you can turn them on and off with. The sky is the limit so you can even put them in your pond or lake!
